Installation

Install Classroom Monitor from each channel on Downloads. News Targeted product only. English steps below; the site UI also supports Norwegian (Norsk).

Get packages from Downloads (login required). For school-wide silent deploy, see Deployment (GPO / Intune).

1. Windows Setup EXE

Primary installer for labs and Update / Downgrade on Setup installs. One Setup EXE covers Student, Teacher, and Server. Always use the durable tip link below (redirects to the current setup_url in version-info.json).

Tip download (latest): ClassroomMonitor-Setup (latest).exe

Interactive install

  1. Download the Setup EXE from the link above or the Installer / GPO card on Downloads.
  2. Run the EXE (administrator rights required).
  3. Choose role: Student (monitored PC), Teacher (console), or Server (licensed school console).
  4. Finish the wizard. Default path: C:\Program Files\ClassroomMonitor\.
  5. Confirm registry role under HKLM\SOFTWARE\NewsTargeted\ClassroomMonitor (InstallationType).

Silent / GPO notes (short)

Same file as Update / Downgrade for Setup installs. GPO can use this one Setup EXE. Preferred silent command for a Student lab:

/quiet /norestart INSTALLATION_TYPE=Student

  • Teacher: INSTALLATION_TYPE=Teacher
  • Server: INSTALLATION_TYPE=Server
  • Also accepted: /silent or /passive instead of /quiet.
  • If INSTALLATION_TYPE is omitted on upgrade, Setup keeps the existing registry role when present; otherwise it defaults to Student.
  • Install log: %ProgramData%\ClassroomMonitor\Logs\setup.log

System requirements (Windows)

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • 2 GB RAM minimum
  • Internet access to classroom.newstargeted.com
  • Administrator rights for first install

2. Windows MSI

Universal MSI (Student / Teacher / Server via INSTALLATION_TYPE) for GPSI / Intune MSI. Tip auto-update and Update / Downgrade prefer MSI when the machine was installed via MSI (InstallMethod=MSI); Setup installs keep using Setup EXE.

Tip download (latest): ClassroomMonitor-Setup (latest).msi (also on the Windows MSI card on Downloads).

  1. Download the MSI from the link above or Downloads.
  2. Silent Student install: msiexec /i ClassroomMonitor-Setup-vX.Y.Z.msi /qn INSTALLATION_TYPE=Student
  3. Change INSTALLATION_TYPE to Teacher or Server as needed.
  4. Detection after install: C:\Program Files\ClassroomMonitor\ClassroomMonitor.exe and/or the News Targeted registry key above.

3. Portable ZIP

  1. Download the Portable package from Downloads.
  2. Unzip to a folder (USB or local disk).
  3. Run ClassroomMonitor.exe from that folder. No Program Files install; useful for quick tests.
  4. For lasting lab deploy, prefer Setup EXE or MSI instead of portable.

4. Chrome and Edge extension

One shared Chromium MV3 zip for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Use the durable latest link (always points at the current tip zip from version-info.json).

Download (latest): chrome-edge.zip (latest)

  1. Download the chrome-edge zip and unzip to a folder you will keep.
  2. Open chrome://extensions or edge://extensions.
  3. Turn on Developer mode.
  4. Click Load unpacked and select the unzipped extension folder (the one that contains manifest.json).
  5. Leave Classroom Monitor enabled. Teacher: open the web Teacher Console from the toolbar or side panel. Student: start presence so the browser can appear in Entire Network.

Enterprise force-install (optional)

  • Classroom Monitor Setup (about 1.5.8.26+) can register native messaging for Chrome and Edge and may write ExtensionInstallForcelist for the packed extension id when that policy path is used.
  • Student Stop in the extension needs a teacher unlock code (same daily code flow as Android). Teacher Close / stop presence does not need the student code.
  • Unlock plus the desktop bridge can clear force-install so browser Remove works again. Sideloaded unpacked installs without Setup policy can still use browser Remove; in-app Stop stays locked until unlocked.

Requirements: Chrome 114+ or Edge 114+ (Chromebook Chrome OS supported).

5. Opera extension

Separate Opera zip (same Chromium MV3 contents as Chrome/Edge; separate download file).

Download (latest): opera.zip (latest)

  1. Download and unzip the Opera package.
  2. Open opera://extensions.
  3. Enable Developer mode, then Load unpacked and select the unzipped folder.
  4. Do not use the Firefox zip in Opera.

Requirements: Opera 100+.

6. Firefox extension

Separate Firefox zip (Firefox manifest). Do not load the Chrome/Edge or Opera zip in Firefox.

Download (latest): firefox.zip (latest)

  1. Unzip the Firefox package.
  2. Open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox.
  3. Choose Load Temporary Add-on and select that folder's manifest.json.
  4. Note: temporary add-ons are cleared when Firefox restarts until you load again (or use your school's managed Firefox policy if you distribute a signed XPI later).

Requirements: Firefox 128+ (MV3 module background).

7. Android APK

Install the current APK from the Android card on Downloads (routed as /downloads/file?type=android). Package: com.newstargeted.classroommonitor.

  1. On the device, allow install from the browser or Files app (unknown sources / install unknown apps) for the source you use.
  2. Open the downloaded APK and install Classroom Monitor.
  3. Grant screen share (MediaProjection) when prompted for live thumbnails.
  4. Enable Accessibility for remote control (tap / Back / Home / Recents). Those prompts are in-app, not only under App permissions.
  5. Student mode: ask the teacher for an unlock code to quit. Teacher Also Stream can stop without the student unlock code where intended.

Requirements: Android 5.0+ (API 21); remote taps need Android 7+. Internet access to classroom.newstargeted.com.

8. After install

  1. Sign in at /login (web dashboard / Teacher Console).
  2. Windows clients should appear after heartbeat; browser and Android clients appear when presence is started.
  3. Open the web console at /console (Live Thumbnails and remote tools).
  4. Server role: complete Server Setup / license so the plan is active (inactive license greys remote tools).
  5. Updates: Update / Downgrade installs a chosen newer or older published version (Setup or MSI matching install type); extension and Android channels are listed in the version dropdown when published.

9. Winget (Windows Package Manager)

Classroom Monitor ships a local winget-style manifest under to-do/downloads/winget/ that points at durable tip URLs (/downloads/installers/latest/setup.exe and setup.msi). Community winget-pkgs submission can reuse the same PackageIdentifier once approved.

Install / upgrade (latest tip)

Downgrade / pin an older version

Winget does not always offer a single-step downgrade for every package. Prefer one of these:

  1. winget install --id NewsTargeted.ClassroomMonitor --version X.Y.Z.W --force when that version is listed in the multi-version manifest.
  2. Or uninstall then install the older version: winget uninstall --id NewsTargeted.ClassroomMonitor then winget install --id NewsTargeted.ClassroomMonitor --version X.Y.Z.W
  3. Or use Console Update / Downgrade / Downloads MSI or Setup for that version (recommended for school fleets).

Silent role still uses INSTALLATION_TYPE=Student|Teacher|Server after winget places the installer (or set it via the MSI/EXE installer arguments in your deployment tool).
